Lessons from the Students: A Memoir of 42 Years of Teaching
Shirley Thacker knew in first grade that she wanted to be a teacher. She lined up her dolls and bears and read to them. She fell in love with words and reading. In fourth grade she made her own science tests to see if her questions might be the same the teacher asked. Shirley believes God gave her the talent of teaching and writing. So much has changed over the years that she has spent in education. She still takes classes and has truly become a lifelong learner. In her latest book, Thacker reflects on her forty-two years of teaching and the lessons that she learned from her students from Clay City, Harrison, and Gaston elementaries, who helped shape her teaching techniques and strategies. Her love of poetry brought the stories to life. She has written five other books. Buzz Wears a Magical Vest, We All Need, Red Chevy in Heaven, Surviving the Journey, and You Are Somebody are available at Kids at Heart Publishing. Sales from her previous books have benefitted: Lawrence Einhorn’s Cancer Research, Alex Cullum’s Football Scholarship, Grateful Rescue and Sanctuary, Brighter Path Equestrian Therapy, and Wes-Del Elementary School.
